Why Your Scalp Deserves the Same Attention as Your Skin
I spent years obsessing over my skin routine and treating my scalp like an afterthought. Shampoo, condition, go. Maybe an oil if I remembered. It wasn't until I started paying proper attention, the same way I pay attention to ingredients in my body care, that I understood what I'd been missing.
Your scalp is skin. That sounds obvious when you say it out loud, but most of us don't treat it that way. We buy carefully formulated moisturisers for our face and body and then use whatever's on offer for the thing our hair actually grows from. The logic doesn't hold up.
What summer does to your scalp that nobody talks about
This time of year is when I notice it most. The combination of heat, UV exposure, and, if you're anything like me, more time between washes because life gets busier in summer, all of it puts stress on the scalp in ways that show up in your hair weeks later.
Heat increases sebum production. That's not inherently a problem, but if your scalp isn't balanced, if it's either too dry or already congested, the heat accelerates whatever's already happening. Dry scalps get drier. Congested ones get more so. And because hair growth happens at the follicle level, what you do or don't do to your scalp now affects the hair you'll be seeing in three months.
That's the part people miss. The scalp is a slow burn. Neglect it in May, feel it in August.
What a healthy scalp actually needs
Three things, consistently:
Moisture. The scalp has sebaceous glands that produce natural oil, but they can't always keep up, especially if you're washing frequently, using harsh products, or living in a hard water area (London, I'm looking at you). A lightweight oil applied directly to the scalp, not just the lengths, addresses this at the root level. Literally.
Circulation. This is the one that costs nothing. Massaging your scalp for even two minutes when you apply a product increases blood flow to the follicles, which supports growth and health over time. I do it every time I oil my scalp. It takes no extra product and the difference is real.
Consistency. Not a once-a-month deep treatment. A small amount of the right thing, regularly. That's what actually moves the needle.
What I reach for
Our Hair Strengthening Oil was formulated specifically for scalp health, not just to add shine to lengths, which is what most hair oils are actually doing. The formulation works at the root, supporting the scalp environment that healthy hair grows from.
I use it once or twice a week, section by section, with a proper massage. Takes five minutes. In summer I keep the application lighter than I would in winter, the scalp doesn't need as much barrier support when it's warm, but it still needs attention.
If your hair has felt more brittle, slower to grow, or your scalp has felt tight or irritated as the weather has changed, this is where I'd start. Not with a new shampoo. With what's underneath.
