How to Oil Your Scalp Properly - The Technique That Actually Makes a Difference
Most people who use scalp oil aren't getting the most from it. They're pouring a small amount into their palm, patting it vaguely on top of their hair, and wondering why nothing seems to change. The product isn't the problem. The technique is.
Here's how to do it in a way that actually works.
Why technique matters more than you think
Your scalp is skin. It has the same needs as the skin on the rest of your body, moisture, nourishment, good circulation, but it also has a specific job: growing hair. The health of the environment your hair grows from determines the quality of the hair itself.
When you apply oil correctly, directly to the scalp, in sections, with proper massage, you're doing three things simultaneously. You're delivering the oil to where it's needed, not just to the hair on top. You're increasing blood circulation to the follicles, which supports growth. And you're stimulating the scalp's own natural processes in a way that simply coating the hair surface doesn't.
The technique, step by step
Start with dry or slightly damp hair. Not soaking wet, the oil won't penetrate well through a waterlogged shaft and you'll just end up with diluted product running everywhere.
Section the hair. This is the step most people skip and it's the most important one. Part the hair into four sections, front left, front right, back left, back right, and clip them out of the way. You're going to work through each section individually.
Apply directly to the scalp. Use the nozzle applicator if your oil has one, or apply a small amount to your fingertips and target the scalp rather than the hair. You want it on the skin, not just on the strands. The hair will get the benefit as you massage, you don't need to saturate it.
Massage for at least two minutes per section. Use your fingertips, not your nails. Firm circular movements, working from the front hairline to the nape of the neck. Two minutes sounds brief but try timing it, it's longer than you think, and the difference in scalp feel afterwards is significant.
Leave it. Minimum thirty minutes, ideally overnight under a silk scarf or bonnet. Then wash out thoroughly.
How often
Once a week as a baseline. Twice a week if your scalp is dry, flaky, or you're in a growth-focused period. In summer, I scale back slightly, the scalp produces more natural oil in the heat and doesn't need as much support.
If you're finding your scalp feels greasy or weighed down, you're either using too much product or not washing it out thoroughly enough. Less is almost always more with scalp oil, you're targeting the skin, not trying to coat every strand.
The results you should expect
Within two to four weeks of consistent use, you should notice your scalp feeling less dry and tight, and your hair feeling stronger at the root. Growth improvements, if that's your goal, take longer, typically three to six months of consistent practice. This is not a quick fix. It's a maintenance habit that compounds.
The scalp doesn't get the attention it deserves in most hair care routines. Give it two minutes and the right product, consistently, and it will give you back better hair. That's a reasonable trade.
